Elle Aviv Newton is a writer, editor, radio host, cultural producer and fourth-generation daughter of Oakland, California. Newton's arts organizing developed at B4BEL4B Gallery in Oakland's Chinatown, where she has curated dozens of underground events, performances and art exhibitions. She gives writing workshops, readings and talks in the San Francisco Bay and beyond. Her writing and criticism has appeared in numerous publications, on radio programs and podcasts, and was recently adapted for the stage. She has been interviewed for NPR, KPFA, East Bay Express, Ivoh Mag and No Good Poetry.
Newton is editor and cofounder with J Spagnolo of Poets Reading the News (2016). PRTN is a journal for the poetry of current events which features U.S. Poet Laureates, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalists, renowned poets and emergent writers from around the globe. The journal has redefined the pace of the poetry world to match the speed and scope of the breaking news cycle. It advocates for the role of poetry in shaping urgent conversations on technology, politics, climate change, gun violence, immigration and world events.
Newton has lived, studied and worked around the world, including Bangkok, Penang, Luang Prabang, Los Angeles, Big Sur and Firenze. She currently resides in Oakland, California where she enjoys being hyper-local for the time being.
